I would expect to pay about 16,000 for a 2710 with FEL and R4s. Maybe slightly less in some places.

Do you guys that use the single bottom plow also use a disk later? Do you find you have no use for a tiller? In the old days my grandparents used to plow the garden with a Ford 8N and then disk it. There weren't any 3-point tillers back then don't guess. Their garden was very productive.

Is a tiller a necessity nowadays, or can you get by with the old tillage equipment? Or is the cost of high quality plows close to that of a tiller?

If you are that large it could be that neither tractor will be large enough for you to get comfortable. I own the Kubota and haven't heard anything about the JD being more comfortable, but the only way for you to find out is to try out the tractors until you find one that is comfortable. You might want to try the L3710 Kubota or even larger.

I have a Rhino 5' cutter that is real well built. I have compared it to the King Kutter sold at Tractor Supply and its much heavier and the fit and finish is much better. I'd buy other Rhino stuff easy (I also have their finish mower and its a real nice unit). It seems like the 5' cutter SE60 by Rhini is about $900.

Well shouldn't have mentioned the tractor to the wife. Should have just gone out and bought it. Its a whole lot easier to get forgiveness than permission.

No way you should pay the extra money. That type of behavior is reprehensible. A deal is a deal.

In 1997 I bought a new 4 X 4 Suburban. There was a promotional deal going for 5.9% interest. I made a deal for $33,000 which was below dealer invoice (of course at that price the dealer still made a profit).

A couple of days later the finance manager called me and said that they had messed up on the deal, that actually there was no 5.9% promotion on the Suburban - only on the Blazer. He asked if I would come down and sign a new contract for $800 LESS (making the price $32,200) with 8.15% financing, so that the payments would be the same for then whole 60 months. Of course if I pay it off early I would owe less.

They didn't try to get out of their deal. This was Friendly Chevrolet in Dallas.

That price for topsoil (about $10 a yard) is delivered. Thats a GOOD price - I've seen it even higher. The main thing is, when they dig that point there will be lots of worthless subsoil and claypan exposed. You would then use your JD to re-apply the topsoil to the surface after the job is finished.

Don't know what size tractor you are considering, but a B2710 with FEL should run about 16K. The brush hog, finish mower, and box blade are important implements, but I'd feel naked without my FEL.

Art, do you set the finish mower lower on the front also? My finish mower has 4 wheels at the corners and I set all four at the same level. I have found that the finish mower tends to bog the tractor down more than the rotary cutter if you get into any tall grass.

I don't quite understand what "bragging rights" you are talking about in terms of buying green versus orange. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Kubota has sold millions more compact tractors than JD. Every time I go down to the filling station to get fuel in my Kubota B2710 there are people that are talking about how rugged the tractor appears. Maybe in your locale you're you have some farmers to impress. If its green they will recognize it as a tractor. But don't buy green for "bragging rights". Buy whatever tractor you like the best.

I don't think the 4100 has given any particular problems since it is made by Yanmar. If you really like the tractor I would buy it, but not for "bragging rights", as Kubota and NH owners have bragging rights too.

I have side discharge mower. It does a fine job, but the discharge chute sticks out and you have to use the other side to get close to stuff. Plus, it makes the mower hard to trailer. Next time I'll get a rear discharge.

I'm glad to hear the stabilizer bar on the 2710 is no big deal. My nephew bent mine trying to push over a 12" BOID D ARC stump!!!!! Not only that, but the finish mower was on the back and it bent the deck on that as well!!!

I guess he thought tractors were stronger than they are. That stump is still there and will take a D6 to get rid of it.

When you loan your tractor out (or let other people do YOUR work with it) be sure and explain that its not a bulldozer.

The fastest I have mowed a 12 acre field is about 7 hours. Thats better than 1.5 acres an hour. The field had more than the average number of obstacles, and not very even. I say had, because most of the trees have since been removed by a D6, and I have a 1.5 acre pond, and a road.

My tractor is a B2710 with a 5' cutter. The RPMs for 540 on the PTO is 2600 and its marked on the tach.

Bird, what kind of pin are you talking about? The only two PTO implements I use on my 2710 have the collar that you have to pull back away from the PTO shaft to get them off. I sometimes have trouble getting them on, but they usually come off pretty easy.

I carry my chainsaw in my loader all the time. I have forgotten about it and dumped it out before, but fortunately I haven't run over it with the cutter.

As for the ankle sprain, I thought that story was going to result in 2500 feet of wire being cut up. Count your blessings it was only an ankle.

Speaking of safety I seem to have particular problem getting my lever handles caught under my britches leg when I get off the tractor. Its too dang hot to wear long britches, but they are safer. I have landed on my shoulder before, but with no injuries.

I have a Rhino 60" finish mower that I'm real happy with. Its a side discharge but it cuts real good. My "yard" has mostly bermuda, but also has dallis grass, weeds, clover, other undientifiable plant material. The mower seems real well built and it looks real easy to get to the belts, plus the grease fittings on the bearings are easily accessible. The 4 wheels pretty much line up however.
